Our Babies Count

#OurBabiesCount is a public health awareness campaign organized by the Ohio Department of Medicaid, the five Medicaid Managed Care Organizations, the Ohio Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics and Black Doctors Ohio that addresses Ohio’s infant mortality problem. One of the leading causes of death amongst infants is being born too soon, and Ohio ranks as one of the worst states in the nation for infant mortality.

  • Be healthy before pregnancy
  • Join health insurance pregnancy program
  • Go to doctor (or midwife) regularly
  • Ask about instant health insurance at first doctor visit
  • Ask doctor about Progesterone
  • Talk to doctor about waiting 18 months between pregnancies
  • See doctor to find unknown health problems
  • Ask doctor about free, long acting birth control
  • Stop smoking

You Can Help

  • Love and support moms-to-be
  • Drive her to the doctor or midwife
  • Watch her kids so she can go to the doctor stress-free
  • Volunteer with local safe sleep and other programs working to reduce baby deaths
  • Mentor moms-to-be
  • Offer career workshops and job training for moms and dads-to-be
  • Mentor teens in at-risk neighborhoods
  • Sponsor a mom-to-be gift tote
