WHAT IS PROJECT DAWN?   Project DAWN is named in memory of Leslie Dawn Cooper, who struggled with addiction for years before dying of a witnessed opioid overdose on October 3, 2009.   Project DAWN is a community-based drug overdose education and naloxone distribution program.

WHAT IS NARCAN?   Narcan, prescription name Naloxone, is a medication that can reverse an overdose that is caused by an opioid drug. When administered during an overdose, Narcan blocks the effects of opioids on the brain and restores breathing within minutes.   Narcan has been safely used by emergency medical professionals for more than 40 years and has only one function: to reverse the effects of opioids on the brain and respiratory system in order to prevent death. Narcan has no potential for abuse.   If Narcan is given to a person who is not experiencing an opioid overdose, it is harmless. If Narcan is given to a person who is dependent on opioids, it will produce withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal, although uncomfortable, is not life-threatening.   Narcan does not reverse overdoses that are caused by non-opioid drugs, such as cocaine, benzodiazepines (i.e. Xanax, Klonopin and Valium), methamphetamines or alcohol.

HOW TO RECEIVE A NARCAN KIT   Call the Belmont County Health Department to schedule an appointment. Training should not take more than 30 minutes. Training will include: Overdose prevention techniques Recognizing signs and symptoms of overdose CALLING 911 Airway and breathing assessment/ rescue breathing/ recovery position Naloxone storage, carrying and administration in an emergency setting Post-overdose follow-up care Clients must give a phone number and first name minimum for contact information regarding expiration dates.     You can also order a Narcan Kit online: ORDER ONLINE
